3d Scanning

3d scanning can be used in a multitude of industries and situations:

  • prototyping, reverse engineering, quality control
  • design, ergonomics, surface capture
  • CGI for movies and gaming
  • heritage preservation, art, restorations, virtual museums
  • medical, orthopedics, prosthetics

The actual scanning of the item happens quickly; the bulk of time is spent post processing afterward to align and clean the scans.

I can deliver the scanned result into one of several 3D formats, such as Autodesk Maya, 3DMax, Autocad, ZBrush, Blender, Mudbox, Geomagic, Rapidform and many others. Typically, I’ll send the .obj and .stl files unless you specify something different.

If you choose to go with a parametric CAD model, I can deliver your files in all the popular formats such as Solidworks .sldprt, Parasolid .x_t/ .x_b, IGES, STEP, and more.

Items to be scanned can be shipped directly to me, or I can bring the scanner to you to for an on-location scan.  I’m located in Temecula, CA; not too far from San Diego or LA.


Probably the most popular CAD software in the world, SolidWorks is a fantastic tool to take your ideas to production-ready models.   I am a Certified SolidWorks Professional (CSWP) with additional certs like Sheet metal and Surfacing.  I also taught SolidWorks classes at a reseller for a few years as well.   I’m a huge fan.

I can assist you with your projects;  from a napkin-sketch to a large, multi-component assembly complete with renderings and drawings.  It’s up to you.

3d Printing

3d printing, a type of additive rapid prototyping, is a fantastic way to test the fit and function of your product.  Different methods of 3d printing will produce wildly different results. FDM-thermoplastic models are usually very strong and stable and can actually be used as end parts in some cases.  Poly-Jet materials will have the accuracy and resolution for complex and smooth geometry.

I’ve spent quite a bit of time with 3d printers; I am a Stratasys certified specialist.  I can help you choose the right type of printing for your project and help ensure that the design is appropriate for the print as well.


Who is Primer 3d?

I’m Chris Chemidlin, the guy behind Primer 3d.  I’m a certified SolidWorks professional; I’ve worked as a SolidWorks Application Engineer, a Stratasys 3d Printer specialist and  have collaborated on designs for several automotive and commercial products.   I started Primer 3d to help smaller, local companies have access to my skills and tools without the heavy investment of another employee, training or expensive equipment.

Some of my customers have a staffed CAD department and just need a part scanned so their designers can use the data.  Other customers do not have a need for a full-time SolidWorks drafter/ designer, but do need CAD parts created from time-to-time.  I’m here to help whether you need a simple surface (or void) scanned, or if you need that complex obsolete part reverse engineered.
